This month I am publishing an article written decades ago, which has, I feel, no less relevance now than it did then. It concerns a particularly technical matter, one which is treated very differently by various martial arts, that of the use of the kick as a weapon of combat. As I state in the very opening of the article, my goal is not to determine the most deadly or powerful method of kicking, but instead the method that is most congruent with the entire technique of Taijiquan, one which can be shown to grow naturally from the artās entire technique, and never contradict it. It is called āKicking in Taijiquan. Use of the Kua,ā and will be one of a series of articles which I am calling Short Takes on Taijiquan.
